The Pashmina Story

Pashmina is a type of fine cashmere wool. The product produced out of it was first woven in India. The name comes from Persia… pašmina, meaning “made from wool”. The wool comes from changthangi or Pashmina goat, which often is a unique type of goat indigenous to high altitudes of the Himalayas in India, Nepal.

Pashmina shawls are hand spun, stitched and sewed in Nepal and Kashmir, and made from fine cashmere fiber.

The fiber is also known as pashm or pashmina for its use in the handmade shawls of the Himalayas. These woolen shawls manufactured in Kashmir are outlined in Afghan texts between the 3rd century BC and the 11th century AD. Nonetheless, the initiator of the cashmere wool industry is traditionally held to be the 15th century ruler of Kashmir.

Cashmere shawls have been manufactured in Nepal and Kashmir for past many years. The test for a high quality pashmina is comfort and feel. Pashmina and Cashmere are produced from mountain lamb.

One distinct difference between Pashmina and Cashmere are the fiber diameter. Pashmina fibers are better and leaner compared to cashmere fiber; consequently, it is perfect for making easy fold attire like fine scarves.

Pashmina from Nepal are the best in quality because of the conditions to which the mountain goats have adapted more than hundreds of years. The high Himalayas of Nepal have a severe, cold environment and to endure, the mountain lambs have become particularly warm and light fiber which may be slightly coarser and warmer than cashmere fibers obtained from lower region goats.

There we find very cold environment, and the weather is very helpful to the pashmina-producing kinds of goat. To endure the icing atmosphere at 14,000 feet height, it creates a distinctive, incredibly soft pashm (inner coat) six times finer than human hair. Since it is only 14-19 microns in measurement, it cannot be spun by devices, thus the wool were hand-woven into cashmere products such as shawls, scarves, wraps, throws, stoles and so on.
